Amy Smart: “Animals Are A Constant Reminder Of Love”
Written by on April 6th, 2012

ou could say actress Amy Smart is Shameless about her love for pets. As a long supporter of Best Friends Animal Society and various other pet adoption initiatives in Los Angeles, the 36-year-old knows that owning a dog, cat or other animal can be the key to a happy life… and marriage.

Smart—who shares a home with two dogs, two cats and her new husband, HGTV star Carter Oosterhouse, whom she married in September 2011—recently teamed up with the ASPCA and Pet Armor to launch a national campaign called the PetArmor® Protection Promise.

“It’s to give affordable health care to pets,” she tells us in our exclusive CelebLove TV interview. “It’s basically like Frontline Top Spot with the same active ingredient, but for half the price. So now, pet owners can afford to treat their animals, especially during this flea and tick season.”

How is it sharing a house with your 2 dogs, 2 cats and your new husband, Carter?
It’s a full house! It’s great though, I’ve had my cats for 16 years. My one dog is nine and his dog is four, so it’s fun having all these guys around you constantly wanting your attention, talking, wanting to play. It’s wonderful having animals. I would never not have animals. 10 Celebrities Who Are In Love With Their Pets PHOTOS

Do you think having pets makes your relationship stronger?
I do, I think animals are a constant reminder of love – unconditional love. They don’t care one way or another whatever is happening. They just want pure attention and love, and it gets you back to what matters in life, it’s a gentle reminder. I do think it helps your relationship.

Would you say that’s your relationship advice for other couples?
I strongly recommend having pets if you like animals. I wouldn’t say get a pet to heal your relationship, but if you like animals and you can make some decent time for them, go adopt, don’t buy! 5 Things Pets Can Teach Us About Relationships

Let’s talk about Shameless. Your character Jasmine is a rebel looking for love and attention. What’s it like to play her?
It’s been fun to play Jasmine. The first season she started off itching for something fun and naughty, and clearly she finds that during the summertime with an older man who has a lot of money. It was fun to see where she goes and how she tries to deal with all the drama.

Can you tell fans what to expect next?

To be honest, I don’t know. I don’t know if my character is coming back or what’s going to happen. But, I’m working on a pilot now with the same show writers who do Shameless. So, we’re crossing our fingers – it’s for NBC, a show called Bad Girls.

And we also hear you have a thriller coming out called 7500.
Yes, it takes place on a plane. It’s a horror movie with the same director who did The Grudge. It’s with Ryan Kwanten (True Blood) and Leslie Bibb (GCB) and it’s just a scary movie! But scary in that really classic way – it’s not a lot of gore, it’s just that haunting scariness.

Amy Smart and Carter Oosterhouse Talk Eco-Living
Written by on March 13th, 2012

We had the opportunity to chat with eco-powerhouse Amy Smart and Carter Oosterhouse while they were on set promoting the new Schick® Xtreme3® Eco™, an eco razor made from 100% recycled plastic and packaged in 100% post consumer paper.

The green duo talked to us about their eco-habits at home, favorite designers, local foods and more.

Both of you were already environmentalists when you met, but there is always more that can be done. Were there any green habits or tricks you learned from one another once you moved in together?

Amy Smart: I have to say, living with him, he uses reclaimed materials a ton. He always finds a way to repurpose anything that could be trashed. So that’s inspired me to be more eco in that way.

Carter Oosterhouse: We’ve learned a ton of stuff from each other. Whether it’s like making sure, you know, you’re taking your hangers back to the dry cleaners and not tossing those out. Making sure that you’re using eco-friendly cleaning products, not just in the bathroom but throughout the entire home.

Amy Smart: Even buying furniture, a lot of them are like FSC certified wood and different kind of materials that are more eco. Or bamboo.

Carter Oosterhouse: Yeah, I mean a lot of furniture is FSC and that’s great. I mean if you can look for the FSC seal, perfect. If you can use pieces that are maybe, they’re hip and the trend right now is to be rustic, is to be vintage. It’s really in right now and it looks really cool.

Do you incorporate eco-friendly foods into your diet?

Amy Smart: We definitely incorporate a lot of eco-friendly foods into our diet. I mean, I like to shop at farmers markets, get local produce, buy organic because when you buy organic you’re not contributing to all the pesticides and herbicides that get into the water table. It also is like you’re donating to the environment as well. So I think it’s super important to start, you know, on a food level to eat consciously as well as meat and dairy, you know, eating organic.

How about clothes? Any favorite green designers?

Amy Smart: As far as green designers and clothes, you know American Apparel started making an organic line which is pretty mainstream and it’s great because it’s made in America. They’re really on the rise. It’s inspiring to see green fashion. Well recently, we’re also talking with Livia Firth, Colin Firth’s wife who is taking the green carpet challenge during awards season and getting different A-list actresses to wear eco-clothing on the red carpet which is again getting all the designers to start going green. Stella McCartney is a vegan designer which is pretty inspiring. And of course, all kinds of fashion you want your legs to be nice and shaved so you want to use an eco razor, and your arm pits.

Carter Oosterhouse: That’s really well said.

If you could change one thing about the way people live and get them to adopt an eco-friendly habit, what would it be?

Amy Smart: If I could get people to change one thing in their life about the way they live and make them adopt an eco-friendly habit, I would say that using reusable products as much as possible, whether it’s reusable bags or reusable water bottles. And if you do have plastics in your life that you’re using, it’s so important to recycle them. As you can see with this great eco razor, it’s all 100% recycled plastic, so it’s repurposed which is so important.

Amy Smart Talks Columbus Circle, Takashi Shimizu’s 7500 and More
Written by on March 5th, 2012

Over the last 15 years the versatile Amy Smart has tackled a multitude of genres on both the big screen and TV including comedy, action, sci-fi, teen stories, and horror films like Strangeland, Mirrors and Takashi Shimizu’s upcoming supernatural spookfest set on a plane – 7500.

Smart is currently celebrating the March 6th release of another recent horror project- the dramatic thriller Columbus Circle- in which she plays Lillian Hart, a privileged but battered wife who reaches out to socialite recluse Elizabeth Clayton (Selma Blair) for help when her husband’s (Jason Lee) abuse goes too far.

Giovanni Ribisi, Kevin Pollak, Beau Bridges and Jason Antoon round out the Columbus Circle ensemble.

Dread Central recently had the opportunity to chat briefly with Smart about what excited her about coming on board Columbus Circle, why she likes keeping her resume so diverse and just how scary she thinks 7500 will be for audiences when the flick arrives in theaters this August.

Dread Central: Can you talk about how you got involved with Columbus Circle? It had to be a great experience working with the great cast that you had on this.

Amy Smart: Columbus Circle was such a fun movie to work on because the material was so great; the story has so many different twists and turns and I thought it was a lot different than a lot of other thrillers right now because you just never know where the story will end up going. That’s the kind of movie I like to watch so I knew it was going to be a great experience.

When I got offered the role and realized who I’d be making this movie with, that got me really excited to be a part of it. Jason is such a nice guy in real life but a lot of our scenes were really intense and emotionally charged so that was kind of strange because he’s not that guy in the movie at all. I’ve actually known Selma for years, but this was the first time we’ve actually been able to work together so that was pretty great. I think the fact that we are so comfortable with each other and have that familiarity really translates in our scenes together- and really, everyone was great to work with. There was a lot of talent involved with this movie and it shows in the final product.

DC: What I thought was very interesting about your character, Lillian, is that you spend about half of the movie thinking one thing about her and then out of nowhere, secrets are revealed and there’s an entirely new character that we’re following. Was it fun to play a complicated character like you did here?

Amy Smart: Lillian was a really interesting character to get to know and breathe life into because she has that duality- she is deceiving and conniving but she also plays off everything very innocently, like she blames everyone but herself when things start to go wrong. Lillian certainly was a deceitful character but I also think there is a small part of her that genuinely wants to connect with others- she lives a lonely life on the run and I think deep down, Lillian just wants to settle down into a normal life and leave all the deceit behind her. Unfortunately, she never gets that chance because of how everything works out in the story and even though Lillian is a villain, she’s kind of a victim too.

DC: Your resume is incredibly varied after working so steadily in the industry for 15 years now- what is it that you look for now when new considering projects to keep things fresh?

Amy Smart: You know, I always like to keep my work varied so I don’t get pigeonholed into one category of movies or really- just end up bored professionally. I like trying new things and challenging myself as an actress so while I’ve done a lot of drama, I’ve also done a few comedies, some romantic comedies and some horror- I think the only way you can continue to improve as a performer is to keep pushing yourself.

DC: I know you recently just worked on 7500, which is a supernatural horror flick set inside a plane- so how much is this movie going to mess with people who already hate flying?

Amy Smart: Oh wow, let me just tell you something – that movie is going to be scary! (laughs) But yeah, I knew the scares were going to be there from reading the script, but to actually see the atmosphere while shooting on set was something else entirely. It was just creepy stuff and the fact that it’s set on a plane is just so unnerving because we all hate to fly; any time you feel turbulence, you can’t help but start to panic and the ‘turbulence’ they had on set was just insane. Even though our director Takashi (Shimizu) doesn’t speak English, his kind of horror was able to translate, and I really think fans are going to be terrified by this movie.

George Gallo’s thriller Columbus Circle stars Selma Blair, Amy Smart, Jason Lee, Giovanni Ribisi, Kevin Pollak, and Beau Bridges. Look for it on DVD and Blu-ray on March 6th, 2012.
